Dallas Newborn Lifestyle Session
This session happened right when the world started flipping upside-down with the coronavirus pandemic! I am so happy we were able to take these before things really started to get crazy in the world (still taking many precautions). My heart went out to all the mamas and new babies born during the shut down when all photoraphy sessions were stopped and plans had to change.
Is an in-home newborn lifestyle photoshoot right for you?
Though I absolutely adore in-home sessions they definitely aren’t for everyone and sometimes there are other factors that may lead to not doing the session in your home. These are the main questions to ask yourself when considering an in-home newborn lifestyle session:
-
Do I like the candid newborn pictures instead of posed? I bring a few baskets to use for some simple pictures of just baby but if you like the naked baby posed in various positions then a newborn studio session is more your style.
-
Does your house have enough space AND natural light? The general areas I love to photograph in is the nursery, master bed, and living room. These areas must have enough space for me to walk around to get specific angles. The biggest factor with all photography is the lighting. Since I am a natural light photographer I depend on the amount of light that is coming into your home. Some homes just don’t have great natural light and in that case you can still get beautiful lifestyle pictures in a beautiful studio full of natural light.
Siblings during newborn photoshoots
When older siblings are involved, contradictory to what you might think, they are the real stars and focus! Making them happy and capturing their personalities is my goal throughout the session. Since babies aren’t mobile and are generally content in their parents arms, we gotta focus on siblings! And I love how this big brother’s outfit captures his personality with the fish shirt and suspenders but is still perfect for a photoshoot.
Order of shooting during an in-home newborn lifestyle session
This first depends on if baby is really sleepy when I arrive or if he/she is still very awake. If baby is sleepy start with pictures of just baby but if not then save those until towards the end when baby will surely be tired from other pictures. So if baby is not sleepy when arriving I go in the following order:
-
Full family pictures in living room and master bedroom
-
Siblings with baby
-
Mom and Dad with baby
-
Dad with baby (then dad can go take care of the older siblings)
-
Mom with baby
-
Just baby
And I make sure to snap some of just the nursery at the beginning if baby is still eating or during the session if baby needs another feeding.
